Besides Ben Affleck, These Celebrities Caught Getting Drunk After Relapsing on Alcohol

Being seen in various embarrassing moments during their boozy states, these celebrities prove that staying sober is an ongoing battle that continues even after years of commitment and rehab stint.

Drug abuse and alcohol addiction are two of the ugly realities that are often found behind the glitzy lifestyle of show business. Many times, their run-ins with booze and illegal substances led those who were dealing with them to rehab stints, legal troubles or worse, overdose.

As one of the common attempts to get one’s life back on track, rehab treatment is often expected to help the person clean up his/her act and stay sober. That, however, doesn’t always turn out to be successful for everyone.

Ben Affleck is a recent example of a rehab grad who relapsed. Years after battling the demon, he joined a residential treatment in 2017 and again checked into inpatient care last year. After leaving the facility later in 2018, he opened up about his lifelong battle with alcoholism, saying, “One is never really in or out of treatment. It is a full-time commitment. I am fighting for myself and my family.”

On October 25, he celebrated his one year of sobriety, only to break it as he was caught getting drunk after attending UNICEF Masquerade ball in West Hollywood. The “Justice League” actor was captured on camera almost falling down when walking to his chauffeured car and struggling to keep his balance. After the embarrassing moment, he admitted he had “a slip,” but vowed not to let it “derail” his progress.

And he’s not the only one who has shown that staying sober is an ongoing battle that continues even after years of commitment and rehab stint. Without discouraging those who are battling similar issues, here are other stars who have had public relapse on alcohol.

1. Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry‘s personal life isn’t as bright as his career during his “Friends” days. Having been dealing with drugs and alcohol since filming the NBC hit series, he entered rehab more than once with the latest one being in 2001 for addiction to Vicodin, methadone, amphetamines and alcohol. He later would openly talk about his battle with alcohol and substance abuse, and was hailed as a celebrity spokesperson for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.

That, however, couldn’t keep him sober all the time. In 2016, he sparked concern among fans after he was slurring his words and looked drunk during his appearance on U.K.’s show “This Morning”, leading to speculation that he was high on booze.

2. Kelly Osbourne

Born into a family of a rock star, Kelly Osbourne turned to alcohol and drug to cope with her depression since the age of 17. She first entered rehab in 2004 for an addiction to painkillers. She suffered a relapse in 2005 and again in 2009, which both led her to receive treatment at a drug treatment facility. Following her 2009 rehab stint, she claimed that this was the first time she really thought rehab had helped her.

While it appeared to be a positive sign of her serious commitment to sobriety, the daughter of Ozzy Osbourne continued to battle drug and alcohol issues in the following years. In 2016, it was reported that she had a drunken meltdown. She was caught on camera unleashing a rant at a mystery man outside a hotel in West Hollywood allegedly over an accusation that he sexually assaulted her. After multiple rehab stints that totaled at seven, Kelly declared in 2018 that she had been sober for a year.

3. Shia LaBeouf

As if caught getting drunk in public wasn’t bad enough, Shia LaBeouf landed himself in legal trouble multiple times due to his drinking habit. In 2014, he caused a scene at New York’s Studio 54 theater, reportedly “acting disorderly, yelling and being loud.” Police were called and he was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. He then voluntarily sought treatment for alcoholism, joining a 12-step program.

But that wasn’t the end of the “Transformers” star’s drunk saga. In 2017, he was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, for public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and obstruction. Bodycam footage from a responding officer shows him launching profane tirade against the arresting officers following his arrest. Being fined $1,000 and sentenced to 12 months of probation in addition to being required to attend anger management counseling, he once again checked into rehab, during which he was allegedly diagnosed with PTSD.

4. Jon Hamm

While his “Mad Men” character Don Draper enjoys cigarette a lot, Jon Hamm had a strong attachment to alcohol in real life. It was exposed in 2015 when his rep confirmed that the Emmy Award-winning actor just completed inpatient treatment for alcoholism. After the rehab stint, he ended his relationship with his longtime partner Jennifer Westfeldt, with rumors saying that his drinking behavior factored in their separation.

In 2016, he opened up about his rehab for alcoholism, saying, “It works. It’s great.” Despite crediting the 30-day treatment for helping pull himself “out of the grind for a period of time” and concentrate on “recalibrating the system,” he seemingly couldn’t completely cut his ties with booze. In 2016, he was caught drinking gin and tonics at a bar, allegedly because he couldn’t handle the stress of his career. He was also pictured drinking a beer while out with friends at Franklin & Company in Los Angeles in 2017.

5. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan is one of those former child stars who has a troubled life. She’s known for her antics, including her boozy night outs which continued even after two DUI arrests and rehab stints. In 2014, Oprah Winfrey attempted to get her life back on track by making a docuseries that would chronicle her journey to sobriety and career comeback.

However, the show ended up capturing her public relapse that culminated with her allegedly getting drunk at the show’s viewing party. Needless to say, Oprah didn’t keep the show alive for a second season.

6. Charlie Sheen

Speaking of a troubled star, Lindsay Lohan finds her equal in Charlie Sheen. Having had his fair share of fame since young age, the son of veteran actor Michael Sheen was no stranger to consuming drugs and alcohol that led to a stroke after overdosing while using cocaine in 1998. Following the close call, he stayed out of trouble in early 2000s, but that’s only so long it lasted.

In 2010, he trashed his room at the Plaza Hotel while being high on alcohol and drug. That was only the beginning of his public meltdown, as he was fired from then-hit CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men” in 2011 after he made derogatory comments about the series’ creator, Chuck Lorre. In 2014, the Major League star appeared to be heavily drunk at a Taco Bell drive-thru, stumbling over to a car and ripping open his shirt as seen in a viral video. “Sorry, I’m so f****** hammered,” he admitted in the clip.

7. Michelle Rodriguez

Who would’ve thought that Michelle Rodriguez, whose character Letty Ortiz always appears to be bright in the “Fast & Furious” films, had several run-ins with the law due to her alcoholism. She was charged for hit and run and drunken driving in 2003, and was sentenced to 48 hours in jail, community service, a three-month alcohol program, and three years of probation.

Two years later, in 2005, the 41-year-old actress got caught drunk driving again while filming TV series “Lost” in Honolulu, Hawaii. This violated her L.A. probation, and she was sentenced to six months in jail. But thanks to overcrowding, she was released from jail on the same day she entered. Michelle was also ordered to complete a 30-day alcohol rehabilitation program, and another 30 days of community service.

8. David Hasselhoff

David Hasselhoff, best known for his role on TV series “Baywatch” and “Knight Rider”, had his reputation tarnished when a drunk video of him surfaced online in 2007. In the viral clip filmed by his then-16-year-old daughter Taylor Ann, he rolled on the floor in his Las Vegas hotel room and struggled to eat a cheeseburger.

In a statement released after the video was released, the TV vet, who had been battling alcoholism prior to the Las Vegas incident, admitted he had asked his daughter to film him if he relapsed. The video served as a wake-up call for him and he has since taken his battle with alcohol much more seriously. In May 2009, his attorney Mel Goldsman described the actor as “a recovering alcoholic.”
